Endodontist Dr. Bruce Smith
Having earned a Bachelor’s degree in Biology before entering Dental School, Dr. Bruce Smith graduated from Tufts University, School of Dental Medicine, in Boston, MA with a DMD degree (these are the Latin initials meaning Doctor of Dental Medicine) in 1976. He was awarded a US Navy scholarship during his studies, and then served two years on active duty, followed by 10 years in private practice as a general dentist in Santa Barbara, CA.
Seeking adventure and also desiring to further his education, Dr. Smith returned to the Navy Dental Corps. He served “Afloat” aboard the USS New Orleans (LPH-11) during Operation Desert Storm. Following that, he served with the US Marine Corps “Ashore”, both during the turmoil in Somalia, and also leading a humanitarian aid dental team to remote villages in the mountain jungles of Honduras.
Selected for advanced specialty training in Endodontics, Lieutenant Commander Smith completed his residency program at the Naval Postgraduate Dental School, Bethesda MD in 1996. He concurrently earned a postdoctoral Master of Science degree from The George Washington University, Washington, DC.
Dedicated to staying abreast of current research, cutting edge technology, and innovative clinical techniques, he attends continuing education seminars throughout the year. San Diego Magazine annually promotes its "Top Dentist" awards by specialty. Voted by his peers, for several years running Dr. Smith has been recognized and received this honor for Endodontics.
He holds professional memberships with the American Dental Association, American Association of Endodontists, California Dental Association, California State Association of Endodontists, and the San Diego County Dental Society. Dr. Smith and his wife live in Rancho Bernardo, and together have 5 sons. He enjoys golf (but chooses not to reveal his scores), Gold Wing motorcycle touring, travel, and although his former passion of underwater photography has faded, he still takes pleasure in snapping a few opportune photos “topside” now and then.
